7pm: A Special Film Screening, Shylah Hamilton’s Oak Park’s Hope, a documentary about artist Claudia Bernardi's residency at Sacramento High School
The 40 Acres Art Gallery is pleased to present its fifth annual Best of Sac
High juried art competition. Five years is certainly an incredible milestone,
both for the 40 Acres Art Gallery as well as for Sacramento High School. In
particular, after over a year of renovations to Sac High, art students finally
were able to move back into the school’s east wing. In the midst of this
fresh beginning, students were back to work with clay as the ceramics
classes resumed. Art students and graphic classes settled in to their new digs
ready to gear up for the annual contest. Also, students took part in a unique
art residency with international artist, Claudia Bernardi, who spent three
months at Sac High this past Fall, immersing herself in our youth’s lives. The
residency brought the importance of art and its world-wide relevance to our
students in Oak Park.
Each year the judging team prepares to sort through hundreds of student
submissions. This year’s team of jurors included Sac High teachers Antonio
Sarabia, Annie Murphy-Robinson, Barbara Hansen, Dale Means, Dann
Hagstrom, School of the Arts Principal Ed Manansala, 40 Acres Director Kim
Curry-Evans, myself, Sac High student alum Randy Hutchinson and Jessica
Dore, and esteemed guest artist Juan Carrillo.
As always, we extend a special note of gratitude to our sponsors and
contributors to the Best of Sac High, including sponsors Bank of America,
St. HOPE, and the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Additionally,
project support was generously provided by Camera Arts, University Art and
Utrecht Art Supplies, who each contributed awards for our winning artists.
Congratulations to all the students that were accepted into the competition.
We hope that the exhibit keeps its momentum for years to come. To all of the
students at Sac High, keep up the good work and keep pushing your creative
talent.
I would also like to say thank you to St. HOPE and Kim Curry Evans, who
continues to believe in the arts and its significance to the Oak Park and Sac
High community. Countless students get unique opportunities to exhibit their
artwork at 40 Acres, underground books, and Uncle Jed’s Cut Hut, as well
as gain exposure to nationally known artists, attend 40 Acres’ educational
events moderated by Sacramento State & UC Davis faculty, and attain real world
experience in gallery administration and operations as gallery interns
and volunteers.
