Our third year of presenting programming celebrating Black History Month will be the best year ever, with events that are appealing to all ages. From book readings and poetry slams to film screening and gospel concerts, there is no shortage of events that confirm that Black History is American History!

 


Special Events

Mardi Gras with Loco Bloco
Saturday, February 25 th, 7pm
Guild Theater, $5.00
Join us for the celebration that will have you dancing in the aisles! The award-winning San Francisco performance ensemble, complete with percussionists, a brass band, dancers and performers on stilts, will provide their first-ever performance in Sacramento. The family-oriented evening will provide a fascinating glimpse into the multi-cultural festivities of Mardi Gras. Bring your beads and join the fun! Tickets can be purchased in advance at the 40 Acres Art Gallery and underground books.

Gospel Concert with Paradise Missionary Baptist Church
Sunday, February 26 th, 3:00pm

February’s celebration of African American culture closes with a tribute to the power of gospel music. Led by Pastor Alonzo Morris, Paradise MIssionary Baptist Church will provide a free concert at the Guild Theater, guaranteed to get your toes tapping!.

Movies

Sunday Film and Dessert: Sunday’s are about family! Bring the family to the Guild Theater for free Sunday afternoon screenings of films about life in African American communities, and then join us afterwards at the art gallery for art and soul food dessert!

Youth Programming

February also has educational programming that is youth-oriented. From elementary school to high school, there are no shortages of events that offer fun, creative and even provocative topics to explore. Schools are encouraged to call in advance for reservation for groups, at 916-649-7900..

Youth Presentation with Sandy Lynne Holman

Children’s book author Sandy Lynn Holman presents a lively interactive discussion for youths about African and African American history. Suitable for 1 st – 3 rd grades.

Rize (PG-13) Film Screening and Discussion
Thursday, February 9 th, 1pm
Guild Theater, Free
Rize chronicles a dance movement that rises out of South Central Los Angeles with roots in clowning and street youth culture. High school students can watch the film, followed by a discussion about the relevance of this dance style in contemporary culture.

Music Workshop with Jon Jang and Gang Situ

As special guest composers for the Sacramento Philharmonic, San Francisco musicians Jon Jang and Gang Situ will provide a musical workshop with an emphasis on the contributions of African Americans. Redemption (R) Film Screening and Discussion for High School Students

Redemption tells the story of Stan "Tookie" Williams, founder of the Crips L.A. street gang. The film will be followed by a discussion regarding Williams’ life and subsequent execution in California. Deborah Willis, curator for the exhibit, Saturday Night Sunday Morning, will be present to discuss her experiences organizing the show as well at talk about current photography projects. Willis is an accomplished photographer, art historian as well as curator, with several distinguished publications, including Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present, to her credit.
